Jet Lag Can Really Put a Damper on Your Vacation

Have you ever had a bad case of jet lag while on - or coming back from - vacation? We typically associate jet lag with flying. However, jet lag is not actually caused by flying, but is a form of disorientation and fatigue caused by quickly switching to a different sleeping schedule and with different daylight hours. Usually we get jet lag when we switch time zones.

One suggestion many frequent travelers will offer is ignoring the time difference and sticking to your regular sleep schedule. On the other hand, it may be difficult for some people to sleep while the sun is out, or go sight seeing in the dark when everything is closed.

Other travelers sometimes suggest using sleeping pills to force your body into sleeping at the appropriate time for the first few days. Do have any other tips for travelers who want to beat jet lag?

Jet lag is a pain.

I try to adjust my sleeping pattern while on the plane. You can't tell whether it's night or day anyway, so I think the flight there is the best time to adjust. If you arrive there at night, maybe try to hold off on the sleep until you actually arrive. If you arrive during the day, sleep more on the flight so you'll have enough energy to last until night. Jet lag is a pain, but there's not reason for it to ruin a trip. I also highly recommend not resorting to sightseeing in the dark.
