Do You Use a Travel Agent?

When it's time to plan a vacation, some people like to make reservations on their own while others prefer handing the deed over to a travel agent. Whichever way you like to do it, they both have their benefits.
In most cases, booking through a travel agent will cost you a little bit more as they need to earn their commission. However, travel agents can have the power to find you inside deals that you might not be able to find on your own. Plus, they'll take the time to find you your perfect trip so you don't have to. Booking with a travel agent definitely saves you time and it can save you money as well.
Booking a trip on your own does take time but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I know I like to make sure my accommodations have great reviews and choose flight times that are convenient for me. Plus I get excited when I can visualize where I'm about to travel to through online pictures. Booking on your own can also save you money because you don't have to pay fees to the travel agent.
Both ways have their advantages and disadvantages. Can you think of any others? Do you like to book vacations on your own, or through a travel agent?

| Let Someone Else Deal With It | | Susan Leonard || Friday, June 19, 2009 15:48:52 PM | | From my experience, using a travel agent is much easier - given that (s)he knows what they're doing and they're good at what they do. Travel agents definitely have the potential to book you a great trip and the fees they charge really aren't too expensive. Travl agents also have a lot of inside knowledge to offer. | | | | Sometimes They're Awful | | Joe || Monday, June 22, 2009 10:46:57 AM | | Usually travel agents are alright, but sometimes, they're awful. My dad and I were trying to plan a big family trip with my aunts/uncles, cousins and grandfather. We were planning to go on a cruise to the Scandinavian countries. Two weeks before the scheduled departure date, nothing was confirmed for us and we had no idea what was going on. Our travel agent was clearly not doing her job. It wasn't until my dad threatened to sue her for ruining our vacation (I'm not even sure if that's possible..) did she start creating a concrete travel itinerary for us. | | |
