The Ups and Downs of Flying Solo

Traveling on your own can sound lonely or even nerve racking to some people. On the flip side, traveling solo does have it's benefits. Have you ever traveled by yourself?
When you're traveling alone you can make as many or as few plans as your heart desires, and it's all on your own dime. Traveling by yourself can be easier especially with making friends with locals and other travelers, and even deciding what time to eat as you only have your own stomach to please.
On the other hand, traveling without a friend, spouse or relative has its disadvantages as well. When you're on your own, there's nobody to watch your back and make sure you're safe. It can be more expensive as there isn't any one to share rooms or taxi rides with. Not to mention it can get lonely if you haven't made any friends along the way. Can you think of any other disadvantages?
Do you have any tips for anyone who's thinking about traveling on their own?
